Good red wines for my beginner roommate - preferably available in PA state stores.?
I am a frequent wine drinker (reds primarily), although I don't know much about it and enjoy a variety of wines including those that are dryer and more complex. My roommate is just starting to drink wine and is still a little bit turned off by anything not on the milder side. I was hoping someone would have a suggestion for a red wine that is not too sweet, but not extremely dry and has spicer or more fruity undertones as opposed to tobacco or earthy that we can try for the house.

I'm more of a white wine drinker, but when I drink reds, I prefer wines similar to what your roommate likes.
I've had good luck with Pinot Noir (Smoking Loon and Pepperwood are two I've enjoyed) and South African Pinotage. Syrah is another varietal I've had good experiences with--particularly bottles from Australia (where it's known as Shiraz) and California (there were several we liked, but the only names I can recall are Firefly and Smoking Loon). Try these with cured meats and a nice gorgonzola!
It's a little drier, but I also enjoyed Ravenswood Vinters Blend Cabernet Sauvignon. Recently, I found a lovely, jammy Zinfandel from California's Lodi Valley.
(And yes, I've bought all of these at PA state stores.)

If you're interested in trying out & learning more about wines, I highly recommend this book: 'The Wine Club' by Maureen Christian Petrosky. A friend of my fiance's started a monthly wine club using this book as a basis; it's been a great experience, and we've all discovered some *very* tasty wines.
