Who is your favorite musician that performs via a stage name?

On this date in 1962, Robert Zimmerman legally changed his name to Bob Dylan. What is the appeal in this act? Do they find their own names not fitting to that of a rock star personality? What persuaded countless musicians, including the likes of Van Morrison, Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, Axl Rose, and others to change their birth names? Where did stage names originate? If you were to have a stage name, what would it be?

FYI: Since Dylan and Alice Cooper legally changed their names, they are no longer considered stage names. Indeed, even their wives and children were legally named Dylan and Cooper. They sign their tax returns as Bob Dylan and Alice Cooper. A Stage name is one used for the sole purpose of one's performance art. A Good example would be The Edge, Sting, Groucho Marx, or John Wayne. A bad example of a Stage name would be Bono. His fellow street-gang members gave him that nickname before he ever tried to become famous, and his friends and family called him that. Stage names have been common since the days of Shakespeare.

Sometimes the stage names work in reverse. Some individuals who are related to a celebrity take a different last name so that they are not perceived to have received undue advantage from their family connection. Examples of these include Nicolas Cage (real name Nicholas Coppola, nephew of Francis Ford Coppola) and Mike McGear (brother of Paul McCartney). Emilio Estévez chose not to take his father Martin Sheen’s professional name and uses his birth name.

Even stranger, SAG and BAEA do not allow two members to have the same working name. therefore, an actor whose real birth name has already been taken must choose a new name! Notable examples include Nathan Lane, whose birth name, Joseph Lane, was already in use, Stewart Granger, whose birth name was James Stewart, and Michael Keaton, born Michael Douglas. The latter chose the last name Keaton simply because he was an admirer of actor Buster Keaton. Michael Andrew Fox became Michael J. Fox because a Michael Fox was already a member of the Screen Actors' Guild. Ugly Betty actress Vanessa Williams officially uses "Vanessa L. Williams" due to SAG guidelines, although the other actress by the same name (Vanessa A. Williams) is arguably less notable. Similarly, David Walliams changed one letter in his surname due to there being another "David Williams". Terry O'Quinn of Lost fame changed his surname from Quinn to O'Quinn as another registered actor already had the name Terrance Quinn.

I can understand why people take stage names. I have an awkward name, and earn part of my living in performance art. I used to use a stage name years ago when i actually thought I might make something of myself, lol. But nowadays I dont bother anymore.
