What would be a good first drum set for an intermediate player?
Though I have experience with drumming, this is my first time buying an [acoustic] drum set. I'm looking for something like this: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ludwig-5-piece-Junior-Drum-Set-with-Cymbals-500744-i1430314.gc (but a little bigger) to go along with this: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Remo-Roto-Toms-6---8--and-10--100231165-i1136877.gc . The set is getting really good reviews... from 8-year-olds. I'm going to be around 14 when I plan to purchase a kit, and I think a junior kit would be a little small... (not according to this guy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlehKbCrlzs ) I'm into Rush, Aerosmith, and the Beatles, which explains the roto toms. Also looking for something with good quality cymbals... and a decent price. And when I say decent, I mean a good price for a 13-year-old. (300-800) I don't have a job, but I have been saving up quite a lot for the past couple years. Suggestions?
Vince: That junior set doesn't look like the real thing to me. I think that, if you're sure you want to continue playing for many years, at age 14 you should be considering a serious drum kit, not a "junior" set. I understand they are expensive, but I would rather see you find a decent used set then buy something you will grow out of in a couple years. I suggest you find a drum instructor or a drummer friend who will help you shop for a used set. When you're ready to replace it you might even get back the money you put into it. $800 might just score you a really good kit.
For sure, don't buy that junior set without playing it first.
