Shower Pan removal and Re-Install with new.?

I am going to be tearing out our very old shower tiles and tiled shower pan.
Upon removal of the shower pan and curb, what tools should I use? I'm thinking that a heavy mallet would be required to break up the old layers of cement. I also have an air powered hammer as well.
My goal is to take it all the way back down to the subfloor (which is wood on the 2nd floor) and start fresh.
I have seen the "pre-pitch" and "quick-pitch" products avail for doing the main floor.
I also want to replace the drain with a 3 piece on as well.
Anyone have any advice on how to go about doing this?
My main concern is the demolishing of the old one.

Thanks.

We're just finishing-up doing the same thing (building a shower from scratch). I think you have a handle on the removal...it's just brute force. You may want to also consider a long crow bar but you may not need it based on what you already have.

When you're taking the old base out you'll probably end-up destroying the current drain (and you mentioned that you were going to replace it anyway). So, you're going to need access to the drain line. Depending on what you find when you remove the old one, you may need to cut the subfloor to get access to the pipes which means you'll need either a circular or reciprocating saw. Then you'll need to cut the pipe to add the new drain. Hopefully your drain line is PVC so you can cut that with just about any type of saw. If space is limited, you can use a pvc pipe saw which essentially looks like a cable with handles on the end. If you're taking on this project, you probably already have a saw. If not, I'd wait until I got the old pan out to see what you'll need.

That should take care of the demo. If you're interested I'll share a couple of links that you might like to see. You can also follow the last one back to a good discussion board about tile. Good luck with your project.
