Can I put Mod Podge on drumsticks?
I painted my friend drumsticks for his birthday (Vic Firth Buddy Rich, I stealthily found out, hehe...) and wanted to know if it would be possible to put Mod Podge over them to protect the painting. Would that affect the grip or the drumsticks or make them unable to be played with in any way? I play the flute, not the drums, so unfortunately, I don't know any better. lol.
I'm not sure which specific Mod Podge product your thinking of, but I would say yes, but with this in mind: if it's a personal gift that you made he would more than likely save and display them as they would be a sentimental kind of thing that you wouldn't want to lose. Drum sticks should be thought of as an expendable item, kind of like cork grease, reeds and valve/slide oil. You're going to go through that stuff and it's the price of playing the instrument that uses it. A special pair of drum sticks that you created specifically for your friend will likely not get used for playing. That said there are stronger polyurethane coatings that may be better suited for your application. As for playing with a heavily coated stick, the smoother surface may make the stick harder to grip while playing, but many drummers wil sand the gripping area of the stick to increase the friction and increase the grip-ability of it.
