I'm thinking about buying a new bass drum, is it really necessary?
I have an old (over 35 years old) 22" Leedy bass drum and it doesn't seem to produce a great deal of volume, although that might be down to poor technique on my part. Also, it doesn't match my nice Premier drums which are in red. Should I try to buy a Premier or another quality manufacturer's bass drum, or will it not really make that much difference to my sound?
If you go to a drum shop you'll be able to try out a few kits there, and you'll be able to see if you produce a similar sound from those drums.
Also, if you haven't already, make sure the front end of your bass drum (the side you don't hit) is raised about half an inch off the floor, which will give you better projection.
