Can YOU help with me with SIMPLE music theory?
Hey Guys
I play the alto sax (Eb) , but I know little about music theory.
What bothers me the most is when my teachers asks me: What key is this tune In?
And I sit there: "Uhhh....what's a key"
I did some research and found Some information on figuring it out.
But I still don't understand, because I look at, say, Cantaloupe Island, and there are no sharps or flats in the key signature so I don't know what key it would be in.
Above the first bar there's a "D-" (same with the fifth bar etc.) The 9th and 11th bars has a "Bb7" while the 13th and 14th have "B-" ends with D- What on earth ARE these symbols????
btw on the very bottom there are 3 solos each labeled either D- Bb7 or B-
But anyway how do I figure out the key?? Or say Anthropology which also has no sharps or flats but it's symbols above bars include G (start) , A- D7 B- E7, etc and ends with D7
I agree with the other poster that you would benefit from some theory courses.
Using Anthropology as an example, it is usually played in the key of Bb... so your chart would make sense, since it is transposed for alto sax. The alto needs to finger a G to sound a concert-pitch Bb.
So... starting with the key your music is in, the key is G. There should be an F# in the key signature, even though F natural would be played in one or two spots. The clue to finding the key is the harmonic structure, which is actually quite simple (a variation of "rhythm" changes).
The G, E7, A-, D7 symbols represent the chords that would be played to accompany the melody (A- means A minor, although I prefer to write Am). These 4 chords are based on the I, VI, II, and V (1, 6, 2 and 5) degrees of the G scale. The first degree is the tonic, which names the key. (This is not necessarily the first chord that is played).
Jazz can get much more complicated harmonically, but you've got to start somewhere... added to that is the fact that the piece is really in the key of Bb... You happen to be playing a transposing instrument (confused yet?
.
So, sign up for a theory course or lessons ASAP. It will improve your overall musicianship, which will improve your sax playing.
(and ask your teacher what "rhythm changes" are...
peace
.
