Can I be 14 years old and be a musical prodigy?
I play a musical instrument called Guzheng (goo-jung), before I had my lessons, I visually learned the difficult songs of Zhan Tai Feng (Fighting the Typhoon) in less than a month and DaHuShangShan (defeating the tiger on the mountain) in 2 weeks. My teacher says I'm a prodigy, but I'm 13 (going to be 14 this year) and I just started lessons, yet my teacher says that I'm one of her greatest students and that I play better than most of her students. I'm already at a level six (ther are 10 levels of guzheng) and I started in june 2010, am I a prodigy at 14 years old?
If I were you, I would never use the word, "prodigy." That's for other people to say about you -- not for you to describe yourself. Apparently, you have a gift for playing this instrument. But don't let that go to your head -- you still need to study and practice.
And even if eventually, you become an excellent Guzheng-player, keep that in perspective, and see how that skill fits into the world at large. There are lots of gifted musicians in the world. It's more a matter of what you do with the gift, than the mere fact that you have it.
