DAP Spackling: can I re-screw into dry spackle hole for shelf mount?
I am trying to hang a lightweight shelf on an old (1930's) plaster wall.
I already made a big hole by mistake by trying to screw a metal Zip-All anchor screw into the plaster wall, and it just crumbled & left a hole about 1/2" diameter. I still need to hang the right side of shelf in that hole using a smaller plastic anchor screw system.
Do I use DAP spackle, let it dry, then drill a pilot hole, then pound my plastic anchor in? OR should I insert the anchor as the spackle is firming up, then let it dry further before installing shelf?
Would putting a couple wooden toothpicks in the hole at the edge make a more solid "wall" when I screw the expendable anchor screw in? (This has nothing to do with cosmetics - I want to use the same hole I made when I messed up and used the ZipAll metal screw. The new plastic anchor would have just an 1/8" inch around it without spackling, for instance.) Thanks.
The DAP spackle will NOT support the type of screw anchor you are proposing to use. It will simply pull out or crumble much as the plaster did. What you need is called a "toggle bolt." You can Google toggle bolt or go to www.smallparts.com and you will be able to see a photo. They have two spring-loaded "wings" that, once you push them through the hole in the wall, will extend outward. You might not even need to spackle the hole and re-drill it. Go to Lowes, Walmart, Home Depot or your neighborhood hardware store and ask for them. Hope this helps.
