What do I use when the conductor score calls for "gourd" in percussion?

In the percussion section, it goes from "Snare Drum and Bass Drum" to "Maracas and Gourd." Seems to me the maracas replace the snare drum sound, but what would I use to replace the bass drum sound?

Percussion music can be a bit difficult to decipher at times, especially music that has an ethnic feel. Most of the time these pieces of music are written by people who don't have a very good idea of what the instruments are called.

In this case, since "gourd" is written alongside maracas, he is probably referring to an African percussion instrument called a "shekere" (pronounced: SHAY-kuh-RAY).

It is essentially a gourd (obviously) that is covered with a mat of beads. It is shaken back and forth from hand to hand causing the beads to smack the gourd. The rattle of the beads resonates in the gourd and it creates a nice "bass/baritone" to contrast the "soprano" of the maracas.

Check my sources below for more information. The second one is a link to musiciansfriend.com where you can purchase shekeres for $12 to $135.

Good luck!
