I am writing a Symphonic Poem: What do you think of my scoring?
I have decided to compose a symphonic poem to the story of Edgar Allen Poe's 'The Raven'. Tell me what you think of the scoring:

Do you think that the instrumentation fits the story?
What instruments can I add (or remove) to give the piece more orchestral colour?
What changes can I make?

Del I just looked up the Ondes Martenot on YouTube. It's exactly what I am looking for! Thank you for the great suggestion!
Do you really mean bass flute? Or do you mean alto flute (in G)? Although the bass flute is gorgeous and would add a dark, spooky sound to the orchestration, not every flautist plays the bass - still fewer own one.
A contrabass clarinet would add extra atmosphere. It has the same range as the contrabassoon but is more organ-like in sound. It can also sound quite scary. Same problem here, though, as with the bass flute (even more so, in fact) as they're quite rare and only brave clarinettists deign to play the contrabass.
It might be cheesy, but I think an Ondes-Martenot would be a great addition to your otherwise excellent line-up.
