Making a Christmas ornament out of the bottom piece of wood on your tree?
My husband and I bought our first Christmas tree as a married couple this year. When we got it home we had to saw off the bottom part of the trunk to make it shorter and level. I want to take that piece and get a slice of wood cut off and get it engraved with something like "Our last name, Christmas 2009". My only problem is I'm not sure what type of place would even do something like that. I was thinking maybe places that engrave trophies or something, but I'm not sure if it would be the same process for engraving a rough piece of wood vs. a smooth piece of metal. Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone done this before? Any thoughts would be appreciated!!

Wood can't be engraved the same way metal can be.
Here's what I would do. Set the piece aside for at least six months in a dry place. It's still green wood, so it will need to dry out thoroughly. Then, get a sander (or just a piece of sandpaper) and sand both sides so they're smooth. Write the date and other information on the wood with a felt-tip pen. Then, preserve it with some varnish or spray-on lacquer. (Any hardware store, paint store or Home Depot can help you pick out the right product.) Coat both sides, and give it two coats on each side if necessary. Finally, put a little screw eye in it, and find a nice ribbon to hang it with. It will be a terrific ornament, and you'll keep it forever!
