Question for serious drummers/musicians?
I'm going to play drum set for a movie premiere, and I know a lot of things, but I have yet to find someone that is an influence to me, what would be a good drummer that I can be influenced by? I'm not talking Niel Peart because I don't really like his style (especially someone who uses a mallet-cat) and Travis Barker is into rap, I guess I'm looking for some more straight forward rock drummer influence with some funk. Any suggestions for a drum solo? I've played solo's before but I'm looking for influence to develop what I have.
I would suggest checking out mike portnoys side project "liquid tension experiment". he collaborates with the guitarist petrucci from dream theater. anyways, they have 2 albums and both are purely instrumental with styles such as fast hard-hitting songs, melodic soft songs, funky drum and bass beats, and even a 23 minute improv track! if youre a portnoy fan, you must check this out if you havnt already. the drumming is top notch and you could pull a ton of solo chunks from things that he plays. uses double bass too, so hopefully youre into that.
