Can you tell me more about my Pearl BLX set and the heads I have on it?
I inherited a drum set, and need some advice. A drummer friend told me that the heads on my early 90s all birch Pearl BLX set are just about the worst heads you could pair with this set. Let me know what you think before I invest in new heads. These heads seem to have lots of life left. They are: Remo Weatherking Pinstripe in Ebony for the batters and Ebony Remo without the pinstripe for the bottom heads. They also have an internal cushion damper put on them. Why was this done? What should I do with these drums? My music is basically indie alt rock, from the white stripes to ryan adams... but no glam or hard rock or jazz. Thanks!

1. What you could to fix the problem is put all REMO pinstipes on BOTH heads . that will fix the drum head tone problem you're having. Pinstipes are very durable, have good even tone and will stand the test.
2. Remo ARE the best drum heads out there in the drumming biz. I have used them for 20 years. I've used the Pinstripe and Emperor drum heads only. I prefer them over Aquarians, Evans anyday.
3. The dampeners are there to muffle the sound so the heads dont "ring" too much. Some drummers have dampners on their drum heads and some don't. Its not big deal really. It is merely personal preference & choice. I used to used small paper towel sheets with packing tape in my drum heads to muffle out the "ring" . Yeah, it look funky, but it really worked soundwise when recording drum tracks.
4. You can keep the drum kit as an heirloom, give it to one of your family members, or sell the kit on Ebay or the Recycler.
