What to know before buying a Djembe?
was thinking about buying a Djembe... what all do i need to know?
i saw what i think is a pretty good one at Guitar Center for about $200. had a nice bass to it, but again i don't really know what to look for. so what should i know before buying a Djembe, or any other hand drum for that matter (like a Darbuka or Conga?)
Djembes, as a traditional African instrument use a rope-tuning system; but newer models by companies such as Remo have introduced a key-tuning method (like a drum kit). Rope tuning looks complicated but is fairly easy to get the hang of through a little research on the net.
Don't underestimate how taut the head needs to be to create an open and slap tone that will cut through. Natural hide heads are now being replaced by plastic, synthetic heads which aren't susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity but some say they aren't as warm sounding as traditional heads.
