Are there any advantages for custom installation directories?
When I install a program, the default location is usually in C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86).
Are there any advantages in changing where programs are installed?
No, there are no advantages to custom installation directories.
All you are doing is changing the directories which are just the folders to where you install something.
Usually, custom directories are used when a computer has several hard drives, for example, if someone installs video games on his secondary hard drive, E:, then that person would change the default C: to E:.
Also, it's best not to change anything other than the drive letters (C, E, D etc.) because there could be problems with updates and other things for your programs which could install into the default directories, and say a update executable needs you to select the directory you installed a program, but you made a custom directory like C:ilikecheeseasdfasdfasdf than you would have to type or paste the whole directory, which is harder than just continuing with the install.
