I need some help on a piece of Jazz music... any help?
Ok, at school we are having a Jazz tryout for the Jazz Band at school. I'm in the 7th grade and I play the drums. Most of the music on it because I don't know what the symbols on it mean. The symbols look like this-- "/". I know what the Crash/Suspended, Base Drum, and Snare notes are, but I don't know what the symbol-- "/" -- is. Is it the High-Hat Cymbals? I need some help, and I can't pass the auditions for percussion part of the Jazz Band if I don't know what that symbol is.... because it is all over the piece.
So, on the "////" (which is what I have in one measure) is like a four beat jazz tune? Like, could I do the original Jazz beat, like with the suspended cymbal?
When you see the slashes, you are expected to play time in whatever style the song is in. In other words, / / / / means to play 4 beats of time - in this case 4 beats of jazz swing.
You are probably used to reading music in concert band, where everything is written out. In jazz charts, the main rhythms are written and the rest is up for your interpretation.
The following book/CD set will help you in learning how to read and interpret jazz charts.
